ICTWEB505
Develop complex web page layouts

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and create a web page layout, to suit a range of devices and a variety of browsers, to industry standards.

It applies to individuals who work as web designers and web developers, have a highly developed understanding of design principles and apply technical skills proficiently, according to unique specifications.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Build a web page according to the design prototype

1.1 Identify the main sections of the web page layout

1.2 Create the web page structure

1.3 Position web page elements to achieve the design specification

2. Ensure web page is validated and tested in major browsers

2.1 Validate the cascading style sheet (CSS) against industry standards

2.2 Correct browser incompatibilities, using the most robust techniques

2.3 Test the website in various browsers

3. Ensure website is accessible

3.1 Check that the website is accessible, to ensure that it can be viewed

3.2 Check website sections, to ensure accessibility

3.3 Check web page elements, to ensure accessibility

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

develop a complex website layout

layout page elements to suit a variety of devices

test web pages in a variety of browsers

validate the pages against industry standards.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the principles of web site design

describe and apply the following in web site design:

hypertext markup language (HTML) and extensible hypertext markup language (XHTML)

cascading style sheet (CSS)

hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)

techniques to correct browser incompatibilities

outline World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards, and explain their application to web design.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the website technologies field of work, and include access to:

a computer

an aesthetic presentation brief

a variety of browsers

the internet, to validate web pages against the W3C.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Foundation Skills

This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
